1 dead after vehicle ‘driving erratically’ causes crash in Avon

AVON, Ind. — One person is dead after allegedly driving erratically and crossing into oncoming traffic to cause a three-vehicle crash.

The Avon Police Department said the crash occurred a little after 5 p.m. on Thursday near the Dan Jones Bridge, just south of US 36.

Preliminary investigation reveals that a driver who was reportedly “driving erratically” and leaving the roadway to pass vehicles crossed into oncoming traffic after overcorrecting and slammed into a vehicle heading in the opposite direction.

The driver who allegedly caused the crash ended up being transported to a hospital where they were pronounced dead, police said.

The driver of the second vehicle suffered serious injuries but is expected to survive. An infant was also in the second vehicle but wasn’t harmed, police said.

Police said the third vehicle involved in the crash ran into the back of the second vehicle. The driver of the third vehicle wasn’t injured.

Avon police said impairment may have contributed to the crash.

Police did not provide any further information about the crash or the vehicles/drivers involved in it.

The identity of the deceased has not been released at this time.
