IMPD: 2 arrested after investigation into ‘known serious violent felon’
INDIANAPOLIS — Officials with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department arrested two individuals on Tuesday after an investigation into “a known serious violent felon.”
According to a post on social media from IMPD, detectives from IMPD’s northwest district violent crimes task force conducted an investigation into Anthony Harris, a man who was believed to be in possession of multiple firearms, including handguns and rifles.
Detectives located Harris and subsequently monitored him at his home. The post read that during this time, detectives filed a search warrant to locate the firearms that Harris reportedly had.
During the monitoring, the post read that detectives reportedly saw Harris leaving the home in a vehicle with another person, later identified as Chanita Dawson. Officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle, which led to Harris and Dawson being detained.
During a search of the vehicle, officers reportedly found three handguns, one of which was reported stolen. The post read that officers also conducted a search of Harris’s home, which reportedly led to the discovery of:
- One Kevlar vest
- 360.8 grams of suspected cocaine
- 8.7 grams of fentanyl
- 49 grams of marijuana
- One scale
Dawson and Harris were both arrested on preliminary charges of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, possession of a narcotic and dealing in cocaine. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will make the final charging decision.
