At least 5 hurt, 75 homes damaged in Monroe Co storms

MONROE COUNTY, Ind. – Authorities in Monroe County say at least five people were hurt and at least 75 homes were damaged from area storms that passed through Friday night.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, a 96-year-old man sustained a head injury from the storms and was transported to an area hospital. Authorities say his injury was reported to be non life-threatening. The other individuals injured were also reported to be non life-threatening, according to police.

Authorities say they assisted with heavy storm damage across the county, including West State Road 45, Stanford Road, Ison Road, Elwren Road, and Harmony Road. An estimated 75 homes sustained damage from the storm, according to police.

Authorities say the Ranchero Motel on South Old State Road 37, and the Clear Creek Post Office on South Rogers Street also received “significant damage” from the storms.

Additional deputies were called in to assist with the severe weather to help those who were heavily affected by the storms, according to police.

Several roads were closed due to storm damage and debris left on the road way.

An American Red Cross has been established at Sherwood Oaks Christian Church, which is located at 2700 E. Rogers Road.

Individuals are encouraged to bring essential personal items for each family member, including:

  • Prescription and emergency medications
  • Extra clothing
  • Pillows and blankets
  • Hygiene supplies
  • Important documents
  • Other comfort items
