Beebe Healthcare to hold pediatric vaccination event Nov. 20

Beebe Healthcare will host a vaccination event for children ages 5-11 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Saturday, November 20, at 3663 Bayview Medical Drive, Unit 3, Lewes, off Savannah Road.

Beebe will use the approved Pfizer vaccine for emergency use for children ages 5-11, which is 1/3 of the adult dose.

Subsequent events with a second dose will occur at the same location 21 days later.

Scheduling an appointment is highly recommended and can be easily done online; go to beebehealthcare.org and find pediatric vaccination appointment.

While Beebe also offers online scheduling of Pfizer doses for adults ages 12 and up, pediatric doses are only offered during this event.

There are many other options for parents who cannot make this date. The Delaware Division of Public Health has multiple permanent vaccine sites in Delaware. Local pharmacies or a child’s pediatrician may also have the pediatric vaccine, although supplies may be limited.

The pediatric dose was approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices on November 2, 2021. Several studies have been conducted on 5,000 children aged 5-11 years. The vaccine was determined to be safe; no serious vaccine-related adverse events were reported. Also, there were no reports of myocarditis or anaphylaxis.

The vaccine was found to be 90 percent effective against developing symptomatic COVID-19. The side effects reported were similar to or less than those experienced by adults.

Side effects may include sore arms, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, chills, and a low-grade fever that lasts a day or two. Reducing possible side effects was one of the reasons the dosage was reduced for those 5-11.
