Researchers at the American Academy for Pediatrics say cases peaked in September, when more than 252,000 children contracted the virus.

dr. Dennis Cunningham, a pediatrician and assistant medical director for infectious diseases at Henry Ford Health System, says children returning to personalized learning and relaxed masks contributed to the spike.

“It’s the cause and reason for this outbreak,” said Dr. cunningham.

“Last year we had very strict rules for people wearing masks, so schools were able to stay open without outbreaks. There is no mandate this year.”

According to an AAP report, 46% of children ages 12 to 17 are fully vaccinated in the US, but the number of vaccinations is decreasing every week.

It’s a bit of a gamble and say my kids will probably be fine, so I’m not going to worry about it,” explained Dr. Cunningham out.

“And people would probably be right about that, but again, I’m afraid they’ll take it home to Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa and other relatives who end up in the hospital or die from it.”

The Food and Drug Administration’s Vaccine Advisory Committee will meet next week to discuss the emergency authorization of the Covid-19 vaccine for children.

If your child is sick, don’t send them to school,” said Dr Cunningham.

“You’re just going to cause more cases and we’ll never get this under control. And by early to mid-November, we will have the vaccine available for children as young as five.”
