Cumberland PD unveils remote road spike strips technology

CUMBERLAND, Ind. — Officials with the Cumberland Police Department recently unveiled new technology that will allow road spike strips to be remotely deployed.

According to a news release from the department, the Cumberland Police Department said they are the first law enforcement agency in the state of Indiana to implement this vehicle-stopping technology, something they said is “designed to bring dangerous pursuits to a safe and swift conclusion, while dramatically reducing risk to officers, suspects and bystanders.”

The release said the technology uses a compressed air system to remotely deploy road spike strips. Officials said that the technology was developed by Spike Stinger International in the Netherlands.

Officials said this new system allows an officer to deploy and retract the spikes remotely up to 100 yards away, instead of being exposed to injuries while deploying them manually.

“This tool represents a major step forward in both officer and public safety,” Cumberland Police Chief Suzanne Woodland said in the release. “It allows us to stop a fleeing vehicle in the safest way possible, for everyone involved, including the individual being pursued.”
