IFD investigating house fire that killed dog, displaced 6 people on Indy’s north side

INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis firefighters responded to a fire that displaced six people and killed a dog Friday night on the north side of the city.

Firefighters with the Indianapolis Fire Department were dispatched around 7:23 p.m. to a residence in the 6700 block of Woodmere Court in response to a house fire in the area.

IFD said firefighters arrived and found a residence suffering from heavy fire damage with the flames spreading to the home’s second floor. The occupants, who IFD confirmed were two adults and four children, safely evacuated the residence and no injuries were reported.

There were also two dogs inside the residence at the time of the fire. Firefighters could only manage to rescue one of the dogs before the flames were extinguished, according to IFD. The fire was brought under control within 35 minutes after IFD arrived at the scene.

The family will receive assistance from the Red Cross to find temporary housing as IFD continues to investigate the cause of the fire.
