INDIANAPOLIS — After cramming choreography and fine tuning technique in training cramp, the next group of Indiana Pacemates has officially been chosen.
Our crew got exclusive access to a behind-the-scenes look at the tryout process and the selection of this year’s team as history was made in the franchise.
A panel of judges observed the final night of auditions to get a fresh perspective on the candidates. This year’s panel included former members of the team, appearance specialists and choreographers. Of course, the coaches that have been with the candidates throughout training camp were also scoring.
For the final night of auditions, candidates had to perform multiple dances on the spot in front of the judges and our cameras.
They didn’t know which routine would be called out until just before the music started.
The energy pulsed through the basement of Gainbridge Fieldhouse as they fought for their spot on the team.
Coach Michelle Duggan said she wouldn’t know who would make the team until the judges deliberated.
“I’m so excited about what this team is going to look like. Just coming off of an exciting year, I think the bar is just set so high. The returning dancers have really tried to set that bar and I think they’ve done a great job,” said Duggan, director of entertainment teams for Pacers Sports and Entertainment. “It has pushed those girls that have not been on the team a little harder and a little bit further.”
After the judges scored each person, they went back to deliberate on the final group.
Each girl is then called in one by one, revealing the team in real time.
You could see the relief on everyone’s face as their friends ran in screaming and as the veterans found out which rookies would be joining the ranks.
They then received their sparkly new uniforms and performed for the first time as the newest group of Indiana Pacemates.
The Pacemates added a spot this year, making this the largest team in franchise history. Previously, the largest team had been 18 members. This year, there will be 19 girls taking center court to hype up the crowd and cheer on the Blue and Gold.
