First-of-its-kind butterfly wall brightens visits for pediatric patients at Carilion Children’s Center
ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. – Carilion Children’s Center in Tanglewood is working to make visits to the doctor more pleasant for children.
Instead of reading a magazine or playing with toys, the center introduces an interactive butterfly wall. Kids can design their own butterflies to release into the display. They can also communicate with the butterflies by moving in front of them.
“The idea, as with everything at the Carillion Center, was to try and make it a bright, happy place,” said chief of pediatrics general pediatrics Christopher Pierce.
“When kids come to the doctor, it’s not always a happy and joyful moment, or it’s definitely a moment of fear.”
The display even changes to match the four seasons.
The interactive exhibit is the first of its kind in the region.
