Parents petition to get administrators at an IPS school removed

INDIANAPOLIS — Local parents are petitioning to remove administrators at George Washington Carver Montessori School 87.

The online petition was launched on Friday after reports about a teacher encouraging students to fight each other surfaced.

Previous reporting indicates the teacher, Julious Johnican, recorded video of students fighting each other. Video recorded by Johnican allegedly captured evidence of him instigating a fight between students.

Johnican has already resigned, per IPS. The petitioners, however, want more than just Johnican’s resignation.

The petition calls for the removal of principal Mary Kapcoe. Petitioners also want a third party to investigate which administrators had knowledge of Johnican’s behavior but failed to report it to the Department of Child Services.

The petition also calls for the following action:

  • Mental health services provided for every child who was in Johnican’s class
  • Development of a comprehensive plan to keep future incidents of violence from happening
  • Hosting of a town hall for parents to express their concerns
  • An extension of the lottery deadline for families who no longer want their students to attend George Washington Carver

As of this article’s publication, 134 people had signed the petition. The goal listed for the online petition is 200 signatures.
